Dear Family, Friends and Supporters,
Some of you have indicated a desire to help my quest financially. This is not something I expected and I am amazed, humbled and honored by your support. Having you support my dream has been one of the great learnings of this challenge—I am receiving and accepting all support with gratitude.
Marathon swimming actually is a very expensive sport. It is hard to believe this because I only wear one tiny suit, a cap and a pair of goggles. However, hiring the pilot boat and pilot, flights, accommodations, food, transportation, etc., well, these expenses add up. Thus, I am deeply grateful for any financial support.
Up to half of my swimming donations will be used to honor my family and friends who are and have been courageous in their fight against breast cancer. In the past, my grandma and my aunt fought the disease, resulting in 1 win and 1 loss. Most recently my mother is fighting her battle with breast cancer. Even before this disease became so personal, I worked at the breast cancer research lab at the University of Minnesota. This cause has always been of importance to me and more so today. I intend to make a donation to the University of Minnesota Cancer Research Center following my 2007 Channel Swim and after any future marathon swims.
The U of MN Cancer Center is 1 of 39 recognized research institutes by the National Cancer Institute. Led by Dr. Douglas Yee, the U of MN Cancer Center is committed to improving the lives of those fighting cancer as well as the lives of their family members. Now, my mom has just begun treatment for breast cancer with Dr. Yee. To learn more about the center, please check out their website www.cancer.umn.edu . Following my English Channel swim, I am donating $1250.00 to the U of MN Cancer Center earmarked for breast cancer research. With my company’s gift match program, the total amount sent is $2500.00.
With your contributions, we will continue to make a difference.
If you wish to make a cash contribution to my swim, I am honored. If not, please continue to send me your love and support in other ways. All are invaluable to me.
Much love,
Michelle
